Addison Ford ? Career Expo ? Technical Writing

This past career expo was the second one I have attended while at Embry-Riddle. ?I had an idea of what it would be like, but I didn?t know for sure. ?I shined my shoes the night before, and I laid out my pants, shirt, tie, and jacket. ?I knew I?d have to look as ?sharp? as possible. ?I printed out a few copies of my resume in hopes to talk to a few different booths. ?I also brought a pen and paper to jot down notes on improvement and what a company looks for after talking with the representatives. ?When I got there, I began by doing a sweep of every aisle. ?I figured that I would get the gist of who I?d like to visit based on lines. ?When I began my booth visiting, I knew I had a strong desire to speak with Tesla. ?I hopped in line and waited for maybe 10- 20 minutes. ?When I was up, I introduced myself and presented the rep. with my resume. ?I had a good talk with the woman that I spoke with. ?She acknowledged that I was the first computer engineer she saw today. ?After chatting with her, I spoke with NAVAIR, SpaceX, and Robin?s Air Force Base.

Overall, it was a good learning experience. ?My resume appeared to be received positively, and no booth turned me away instantly. ?SpaceX was only interested in juniors and seniors, but I was told that I should keep trying because the rep. was in my shoes two years ago. ?The advice I gained can be summed up into one aspect: Gain hands on experience. ?Every booth expressed interest in extracurricular?activities that provided hands on experience with projects that would benefit me in their work place.
